Question 5-FAQ

1. What is a pneumatic forging hammer?

A pneumatic forging hammer is a self-contained power hammer that uses compressed air generated internally to drive the ram. It does not require an external air supply or high-pressure hoses.

2. What is the difference between the C41 series and the larger pneumatic hammers?

The C41 series (up to 400kg) is a general-purpose hammer suitable for small to medium forging work such as drawing out, upsetting, punching, and bending. The larger pneumatic hammers (150kg–2000kg) are designed for heavy industrial open-die forging applications requiring greater impact energy and higher production capacity.

3. Do I need an external air compressor?

No. Guigong pneumatic forging hammers are self-contained. The air compressor is built into the hammer, so no external air supply or high-pressure hoses are required.

4. What is the frame made of?

The frame is constructed from cast steel or high-quality cast iron, similar to classic European hammers like Massey, Nazel, and Beche. This provides superior strength, resists flexing over time, and offers a long service life.

5. How long do these hammers last?

With proper lubrication and maintenance, Guigong pneumatic forging hammers commonly operate for 30 to 40 years or more. Many are still in daily use in established forging shops.

6. What type of lubrication system does it use?

The hammer is equipped with a self-priming automatic lubricating oil pump. During operation, it automatically supplies oil to internal components. The oil serves both as a lubricant and as part of the air sealing system.

7. How is the hammer controlled?

Operation is controlled by a hand lever or foot pedal. The pedal works like an accelerator—gentle pressure starts the ram moving, and increased pressure delivers more forging force. Functions include idle run, single blow, light blows, and full series blows.

8. Can I forge both heavy and light stock?

Yes. The hammer allows you to forge heavy stock and immediately switch to thin light stock without adjustments, thanks to its precise control over ram force and velocity.

9. Are replacement parts available?

Yes. Parts are stocked and available. If a rebuild is ever needed, it can typically be completed in one day.

10. What should I avoid during operation?

Never forge cold metal—always ensure the workpiece is hot.

Never strike the dies together without red-hot steel between them, as this can damage the hammer.

11. How do the internal components compare to other hammers?

Internal parts are forged steel and precision machined. There are no internal rubber air hoses to deteriorate over time. Drive belts are external for easy adjustment and protected from oil exposure. The crankshaft uses large tapered roller bearings in a grease-filled case for decades of trouble-free operation.

12. What is the operating principle?

The hammer has six main components:

Cast iron or cast steel frame

Motor-driven flywheel with external V-belts

Crankshaft with tapered roller bearings

Compressor piston and connecting rod

Precision steel valves (upper and lower)

Ram that “floats” on air

Automatic lubrication system

The compressor generates air pressure, and the valves control airflow to the ram, delivering forging force through a combination of ram weight, air pressure, and velocity.

13. Do Guigong hammers hold their value?

Yes. Due to their durability and build quality, Guigong hammers hold their value well. Used models are rare and often sell at prices close to new retail units.

14. Is there a warranty on the frame?

Yes. The cast iron frame comes with a lifetime warranty, reflecting the manufacturer’s confidence in its durability.
